It’s Been a While…

So I haven’t updated the blog in a long while. Many changes have happened since my last update in September. The first big change you will notice is that I have stopped the Friday Fotos.

I found it was rather tedious to keep track of the URLs for all the inspiring images I kept seeing. Then it was more time consuming than I thought to create the post each Friday.

But fear not I didn’t completely abandon the concept. Instead I found tumblr. For those of you that are not in on it yet, tumblr is a micro-blogging site somewhere between twitter and a full-blown blog. It is designed to post quick posts like images or videos and is centered around a community of posters that you can share and re-blog the things you find interesting with.

The tumblr model fit what I wanted to do with the Friday Fotos better than a traditional blog post. Now anytime I find an image that moves me I can just post it to my tumblr. So if you have tumblr add me to your dash as nealtacular. For now the link to the tumblr will be on the right sidebar. Eventually I plan a redesign of this whole site and things will move around.

The other big news is that I have created a new website to feature the wild fire photos for this summer. Wild Fire Pics will be designed mostly to hold the gallery of images and link to the photoshelter archive so that visitors can buy prints or license images. Hopefully this new arrangement will push my wild fire images to the top of search results and help me build a reputation as the wild fire photographer.

Post Fire, Kern County, CA

Tuesday night I drove down to Kern County to photograph the Post fire. The fire had started that afternoon just north of the town of Lebec and on the eastern edge of Los Padres National Forest. I watched the sunrise over the mountains in Antelope Valley as crews from Kern County Fire Department worked on creating fire breaks along the ridge line.

Later that morning after checking in at the incident command post I headed out along Lebec Oaks Rd. and joined up with the US Forest Service’s Breckenridge Hot Shot crew. They were working on the active part of the fire in Division X trying to stop the forward spread of the fire in some steep and difficult terrain.

Here are this week’s pics.

This is from a Slim Letaief and really caught my eye. I love good portraits perhaps because I feel it is one of my weakest areas. You can see more of Slim’s work on his flickr page.

Never Go Home During Fire Season

Sometimes it never pays to want to sleep in your own bed. No sooner had I gotten home to San Jose then I got the tweet form CAL Fire about the Crown fire in Southern California. I was only an hour away from that fire Thursday.

The fire is contained at 62% as I write this and is 13,918 acres in size. It was a large fire but LA County Fire got a handle on it fairly quickly and when I left the area last night it had mostly laid down and there were no large flames mostly just spot fires.
